Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost on September 14, 1955, in Chicago, Illinois, is the 267th pope of the Catholic Church and the first American-born pontiff. He was elected Pope on Thursday, 8 May 2025. A member of the Order of Saint Augustine, he is also the first Augustinian to become pope. Before his election in May 2025, he served as Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops and held various leadership roles within the Church, including Bishop of Chiclayo in Peru, where he spent many years as a missionary.
